Keynote speaker announcement: Marian Wilson Kimber
The keynote speaker for the inaugural Henselfest will be Marian Wilson Kimber!
Marian Wilson Kimber, Professor of Musicology at the University of Iowa, has been writing about Fanny Hensel and the issues surrounding women composers for over three decades. Her 2002 article, “The Suppression of Fanny Mendelssohn: Rethinking Feminist Biography,” continues to be widely read. Wilson Kimber’s scholarship has treated Das Jahr, Hensel as a travel writer, and her position in the writings of the American suffrage movement. Her article about nineteenth-century band arrangements of Hensel’s Gartenlieder led to performances of them by the Prince Regent’s Brass in England. Wilson Kimber has spoken about Hensel and her music in Germany and Korea, and been quoted in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal on women composers’ careers.
Wilson Kimber’s research into women’s roles in American musical life appears in two books, The Elocutionists: Women, Music, and the Spoken Word (2017) and Clubwomen Activists and the Making of American Music, forthcoming from the University of Illinois Press. She currently serves as the editor of the Journal of the Society for American Music and contributes to the blog, Women’s Song Forum.
